We hope you enjoy this post and if you have any questions feel free to contact us at any time.

With a slate of municipal elections scheduled for late October, upstart candidates and sitting council members across Alberta are gearing up for an intense fall campaign season. With that comes the task of putting together a campaign team, beginning the process of raising funds and also crafting a campaign brand and marketing material. But one of the most critical elements of a strong campaign is establishing an online presence with a fully functional web site.

If you’re an active voter like I am, you’ve probably come across a spectrum of political campaign web sites over the past four years. You have also probably noticed that only about a handful of these site are clearly well done – majority are just absolute disasters doing more harm than good. In a previous blog post, I outlined my opinions on the state of political web design in Canada. But now with an election six months away, I thought I’d put my money where my mouth is by detailing a handful of key elements for building a great campaign web site.

Before we get into the meat of these elements, it’s important to understand the role of the candidate’s web site in the modern campaign era. Unless you understand how the typical voter will interact with your site, it’ll be impossible to grasp what characteristics are key in the process.

The Role of a Campaign Web Site

Before 2010, a candidate’s web site typically acted as the single online activity hub of a campaign. Since then we’ve obviously seen a shift in user interaction patterns, where there is now an even balance between social media activity and the campaign web site. A candidate’s web site is no longer the only element online, it’s now a key cog in three or four active and moving pieces.

Think of it this way, a candidates social media activity and print material acts as a first introduction to the average voter. The entire goal should be to get the candidate’s name in the mind’s of the voter. If a voter’s attention is caught by a tweet about a candidate, notices a friends shared Facebook post, stumbles across a Pinterest photo or drives past a yard sign, that will be their first introduction to the candidate. At which point, if the first introduction is a successful one, the voter will most likely go to the candidate’s official web site to learn more. At which point the candidate will be making their first and most lasting impression on a potential voter and you better hope that their web site hits all the right spots.

Now here is the most important change in the average user activity cycle with a campaign web site. In years past, the average user if impressed by the candidate would probably sign-up for an RSS feed, or bookmark the web site to revisit in a week or a couple weeks. But with the rise of social media, smart phones and our collective diminishing attention spans for visiting web sites on a regular basis, the average voter is going to look over the candidates site once, get the information they need and make a decision to either commit to subscribing to the candidate’s social media activities or to disregard the candidate. From there the social media elements of the campaign will take over and either continue to impress the average voter — potentially bringing them back to the web site for more information as the campaign rolls on or it’ll start to turn the voter away.

In this aspect a candidate’s web site may have lost a bit of its long term importance, but has also increased its value as the biggest element in making a lasting impression on the average voter.

So how does one create a great first impression with a strong campaign web site? Here are some key points.

Use The Right Tools

First and foremost, a campaign has to use the right tools to create an impressionable web site. From my experience building a candidate web site with Drupal or Joomla is overall kill. While very functional tools for larger sites, a Drupal and Joomla site is going to be far too complex for the average campaign team to maintain and it’s going to show in the design aesthetic or with stale content. So while this isn’t real news to anyone, my advice is to go with WordPress or Nationbuilder. Most designers and developers won’t be familiar with Nationbuilder (as a caveat I have been working to become a Nationbuilder architect and it is a great up and coming tool) so WordPress will probably be the default tool for most this cycle.

Now just because you have a WordPress web site it doesn’t mean you’ve completed your work. The biggest benefit of WordPress from a campaign perspective is it’s a very easy to use and universal tool with so many great plug-ins. WordPress is a tool that everyone and their dog can claim to build a WordPress site, but a badly crafted WordPress theme will stick out like a sore thumb. Any site that is a ‘hack’ of an already popular theme will show fairly quickly. It’ll look cheap and inexpensive and that will reflect poorly on the candidate. In my experience, this is probably the most common mistake that a campaign team will make concerning their web site.

So use WordPress, but invest in a proper design. Create something that’s clean, intuitive, unique and memorable.

Make Your Candidate Approachable

This is going to sound incredibly obvious, but a candidate’s face has to be front and centre on their web site.

You’d be shocked at how many campaigns are already committing this sin for the upcoming election. As I mentioned before, a campaign web site acts as the biggest first impression for the average voter, so put your candidate front and centre on the landing page. Make them the focal point of the user’s eye when they arrive.

Now before everyone goes running off to purchase fancy head shots, there is a caveat with this piece of advise — the candidates photo has to be personable.

Don’t photoshop their face and super impose it on a stock image of a robotic skyline. That is so 2009 that it hurts. Do something unique with your candidate. Be creative. Show the personality and charm of your candidate. It could be as simple as showcasing them in the area, ward they represent or in front of a well known landmark of the district they are running in. But overall the images of the candidate have to be personable to people.

Look at it this way, who would you rather vote for? A candidate in a buttoned up shirt and tie sprawled across the perfect backdrop or the candidate that looks like you could run into them on your way to the grocery store or coffee shop of your local neighbourhood?

Nine times out of ten, the average voter is going to take the candidate that looks like they could have a coffee with.

Make It Really Easy To Connect

As mentioned in this post, the role of the campaign web site has evolved. While it is still the most critical element for a first impression, it’s also not necessarily where all the online interaction of your candidate with citizens will occur — that area is regulated to the battle fields of Twitter and the timelines of Facebook.

So with that in mind, it is wise to make your candidate’s social media accounts easy to find. Make them stand out on the site. Make them super easy for voters to follow or like. Now like my previous tips of advice there is a caveat to this, don’t just go plug-in crazy with the social media accounts. They have to be easy to find, but it also doesn’t have to look as though the candidate’s web site is a dogs breakfast of the latest tools. Like everything in a campaign it has to be well thought out and intuitive, so invest in good design and simple aesthetic for the web site. Incorporate the various social media tools, but do it in a manner that isn’t an eye sore.

Invest In Your Web Site

The points I’ve outlined above are fairly straight forward and are based on common sense. Before embarking on a campaign, make sure you understand the role of your web site in the campaign, understand the proper tools for your web site, create a relatable design and aesthetic that represents your candidate and create an online presence that is easy for the average voter to connect with. But what all these points boil down to is ensuring that there is proper investment in a campaign web site.

From my experience, the biggest mistake a candidate can make is to not to properly invest in all elements of their campaign. I have been lucky to work on a handful of great campaigns, with teams that have understood the importance of this concept, but in my research and general observations, many campaign teams in Alberta are already forgetting this simple concept. It’s almost humorous as to how many campaigns will invest large portions of their budget in printed material and online advertising to redirect potential voters to a sub-par web site for more information. With the advent of open source technology and the growing industry of web design, in my opinion there really is no excuse for candidates to have a poorly designed web site in this day and age.

Yikes, where has time gone? It feels like only yesterday we were celebrating the end of 2012 and the beginning of 2013, now we’re thirty days into the new year. Well, it’s time to get back into the groove of things again with our first Nine-Banded post of 2013.

So here you go. Please enjoy!

1. Gothic Extra

One of the most cumbersome tasks in web design can be creating an appropriate content separator. Sure it’s easy to create a simple double line separator to divvy out areas of content on a page or a blog, but what happens when you need to create something with a stronger retro script vibe? Cue the Gothic Extras font set with a wide spectrum of great type for separators or even retro borders.

2. 2BIT

2Bitshop is a fantastic new T-shirt site just popped up on radar yesterday and is from the great people at Calgary design outfit Made By Uppercut. Similar to the great Pictograph poster from the CBC, each of these great retro shirts reveals a very cool pop cultural icon in two simple pixelated images. Can you figure them all out? Here’s a hint one of them is Napoleon Dynamite.

3. Letterhead Fonts

Over the past couple of months we’ve put together a handful of retro logo designs for clients. The font foundry we turn to when these types of projects come a knocking is Letterhead Fonts. If you are ever in need of some fantastic retro fonts, just spend a few minutes searching their incredible catalog and you are bound to find exactly what you’re need.

4. Modernist Logos For Canadian Provinces/Territories

A massive shout out to the always influential Poploser for drawing our attention to this one. Ottawa designer, Michael George Haddad has put together a collection of spectacular modernist logos for all the Canadian Provinces and Territories. Have a look as these are very sharp.

This post has been re-posted from Armadillo’s President’s personal web site as it touches upon a subject that we’re currently very interested in. We hope you enjoy this post and if you have any questions feel free to contact us at any time.

I know it’s a bit of a cliché, but when talking about the advancements in campaign technology and design one cannot underestimate how much Barack Obama’s campaign team has brought to the industry. Whether it was the revolutionary techniques and concise planning employed by the campaign team in 2008 or the impressive data-driven objectives set out by the 2012 re-election team. Either way the ground work laid out by The Obama campaign machines in both elections has ushered in a new era within the political world and has essentially set the standard for the importance of a candidate’s online presence.

And since the end of November those of us who are engaged in this niche market have been lapping up the revealing blog posts from core members of Obama’s 2012 election team. Whether it’s discussing the lean start-up techniques implemented by the tech team or the advanced User data and A/B testing utilized to improve conversion rates or even reminiscing about the design philosophy behind the Obama brand through 2008’s quintessential Designing Obama there is a wealth of valuable information available at our finger tips. (Side note: Designing Obama is a must read for anyone looking to get in the game) So after digesting many of these posts and articles, I keep coming back to this question, why is Canadian political campaign web design and development so far behind our southern counterparts?

Now, I understand that there are some glaring differences between our two systems and one can’t start questioning this industry without acknowledging this. Yes, the American standardized election dates makes it easier for long term planning and budgeting in comparison to the fluid nature of our Parliamentary System – which sometimes needs to react to election calls on a moment’s notice. And one cannot discount the massive difference in population base and the unlimited fundraising advantages with American Campaigns in comparison to our system. But those elements alone do not explain why good design and good development is not front and center in a Canadian Political Team’s mind.

All the tools for Canadian campaigns to build a strong intuitive online presence for their candidates are there. Inexpensive content management systems (CMS) such as WordPress, BuddyPress and even for larger campaigns – Drupal – have been around for years and are widely utilized by many professionals. There are also dozens of very sharp campaign examples from our southern counterparts for us to pluck ideas from and they’re all quite well known – many of them have turned into purchasable templates that can be easily customized. In addition, Canada has a wealth of design, development and user experience talent in each major city. So really at this point there is no excuse for why Canadian political campaigns sites are still so horrible in 2013. If you want an example of what’s going on in this industry, one only has to look at some of the candidate sites for the Ontario Liberal Leadership race. A good majority of these sites are either unappealing or “bland”:http://www.votesousa.ca/. Many of them almost seams like an after thought to the campaign and add little excitement to their candidate’s profile. Now compare them to the stunning and fluid design of Kathleen Wynne’s campaign site www.kathleenwynne.ca, which just shines in comparison to her competition.

Now, in defense of the some of these campaigns, they’re not the only ones out there. I could have easily used other campaign examples over the past two years (Alberta’s 2012 Provincial Election, The Recent Federal By-Elections or municipal elections in Saskatoon and Ottawa over the past year), but the stark difference between a strong majority of Ontario Liberal Leadership candidates and Kathleen’s team shows a massive disparity in the industry. On the one hand you have a collection of sites that look and feel as though they have been hammered together in haste, while Wynne’s site acts and feels like a well throughout focal point of campaign information and activity. And I’m not even considering the parallax microsite The Way Forward which is just miles ahead of anything the other candidates are bringing to the table. Wynne’s site engages users from the get go, gives off the aura of a modern and forward thinking candidate and draws users to get involved. While the other campaign sites rarely invoke an emotion or instill confidence in the candidate, most end up taking away from the candidate’s true attributes and qualifications with small but glaring errors.

Again, I don’t mean to harp on these hard working teams, as there are dozens of examples across many recent Canadian campaigns that could easily prove my point. But what is the issue in Canadian campaign design? If we understand that money and campaign finances are a hindrance, but at the same time understand that there are many free tools out there and a wealth of available talent, what is the problem? Why are the majority of these sites so bad?

I’ll throw this out there and I’m open to counter points, but in my opinion, the problem with the state of web design in Canadian politics actually ties back to the recent success of Obama’s team. Whenever Obama’s success is discussed on a higher level the conversation ultimately focuses on the social media myth of that team’s success. While there is no question that Obama broke major ground with his use of social media, what is easily forgotten, even with the wealth of information out there, is that Obama’s online presence included the entire package. The iconic Obama imagery and the campaign slogans created a symmetry across all the campaigns networks. The web site was designed with users in mind and interwoven with an aura of modernization. All these elements were designed together to form Obama’s online presence. Yes, social media was a factor, but social media was only a tool to reach out to voters and supporters, ultimately it drove them back toward the main Obama web site to donate, interact, organize and learn about Obama. In most Canadian campaigns, I’m not seeing that sort of full package concept or planning, which is what I believe is wrong with the industry. There needs to be less focus on the myth of social media and more on the overall online package – ideas that Obama’s team have written about since the 2012 campaign ended.

Earlier this month, we officially launched our very first iPhone App. Of course this was cause for much jubilation and celebration around the Team Armadillo offices. After almost three years on the sidelines of the app industry and promoting the local app development community within Calgary, it was great to finally dip our toe into the playing field.

So in honour of first foray into the world of iOS App development, we are dedicating this week’s edition of Nine Banded to our some recent apps that have really caught our eye and one app that we’re incredibly excited to see launched.

1. Swackett

Swackett is an app that we stumbled upon during the UX Ottawa Design conference earlier in October.

Swackett is an iOS/Mac weather app that visually tells users how to dress for the weather outside. Unlike many similar weather apps, Swackett uses a pretty basic (and somewhat humorous) visual design to get right to the point of the eternal question – what is the weather like outside and do I need a coat. Simplicity, versatility and a great user experience make this a must have for all our friends trapped in the Great White North.

2. Setlist

Setlist is an app developed by our good friends at Medium Rare. The app which when tied into the ever popular social music app Rdio will pull your favourite artists and give you a list of upcoming concerts in a city based on your musical tastes.

Given how busy our lives are and how difficult it is to keep on top of the music scene on a daily basis, Setlist is a god send. Not only is it beautifully designed and simple, but the app is a great tool when looking for shows while traveling. If you’re heading to a city for a bit of a visit and wondering if there will be a show when you’re there, just fire up Setlist and add the new city – presto a list of shows that you might catch.

3. iHunter

Although we’re not avid hunters ourselves the guys at iHunter have released a fantastic new app to help Alberta based hunters navigate the outdoors on that quest for the big prize.

Created by two really close friends of the company, Mark Stenroos and Gareth Burke, iHunter is a beautifully designed app that allows Alberta hunters access to a wealth of information and geodata to help in their excursions. The app has a received some great feedback recently and strong sales since launching a few weeks ago, so to honour such an impressive first run we thought we’d give them an epic shout out.

4. Castle Conflicts

It’s no secret that Team Armadillo is a sucker for some old school RPG action (Kingdom of Loathing anyone?). It’s also not a secret that we are massive fans of the work of Calgary iPhone game developer Broken Kings. So by that logic, it’s also no secret that we’re giddy with excitement for the release of Broken King’s sequel to their smash hit Castle Conflicts.

The team at Broken Kings have been leaking gorgeous screen art for the game on their Facebook page and because of which we’re sitting on pins and needles waiting for an official release date. The first Castle Conflicts was an exceptional game built on a shoe string budget, so we can only image what this rendition is going to be like.

Today Team Armadillo is incredibly excited to announce the launch of our very first iOS App – The People Power App from the The International Center For Non-Violent Conflict.

Earlier this year, we were approached by members of The International Center of Non-violent Conflict to help create a unique iPhone app that would act as an aggregate for their various information outlets. The team wanted a customized app that would not only allow users to share the organizations incredible amount of unique data, but also a tool that would allow users to watch videos, download their paper Civil Resistance: A First Look, connect on social media networks and subscribe the latest news from the organization. The app also had to feature the upcoming redesign of the organization and their new branding scheme.

So we hand crafted an iOS app that would meet all of their goals. The People Power App is a unique tool that incorporates all the organization’s online identities in one single program to allow users to connect with the centre on the go. Users can see the latest news digest information, subscribe to the organization’s newsletter and learn about various non-violent conflicts across the world. Users can then share all elements of the app with friends and family to raise awareness of these crucial events and issues. The app also works across a wide spectrum of iPhone products including iPod Touch 3rd & 4th Generation platforms and of course for the iPhone 4, 4S and iPhone 5.

We are incredibly honored and excited to be apart of this project. Not only because this our first major foray into the iOS App development world, after years of sitting on the sidelines, but because this is a cause and organization that we admire. It has been an absolute pleasure working with ICNC and we look forward to continue to develop the app and improve their online presence.

The People Power App is now available to download. Please feel free to download and share your feed back with us.

This week’s edition of Nine-Banded looks at three of Team Armadillo’s side passions. Yes, it’s true when we’re not coding Drupal modules, pushing pixels in photoshop or cursing Apple’s XCode, we’re probably checking out the latest sports news, the newest CDs and of course catching up on the latest political happens with our good friends John Stewart and Stephen Colbert.

So this week’s Nine-Banded is dedicated to the fascinating intersection of design and our side passions.

1. The SBNation Redesign

SBNation is a network of over 360+ sports blogs, which provides individual coverage for each of the major teams of every single North American professional league. Last month, SBNation redesigned their entire network. While a redesign of this nature is inherently monumental, they also decided to redesign the logos and branding of all 360+ sites. Of course to provide a more concise symetry between the entire network, this task was assigned to one single designer and he had seven weeks to complete the project.

Check out the video below for more information.

Take a step back and think about that for one second. On average, a logo redesign takes about 3-4 weeks of work to really nail down, while Davidson had less than 7 weeks to put together 360 logos together. Absolutely Incredible.

2. CBC’s Canadian Pict-o-Bands

Last week we stumbled upon CBC’s Canadian Pict-o-Band blog post. In it, the designers and music bloggers at the CBC crafted a beautiful poster of 24 pictograms symbolizing some of Canada’s most famous musical talents. To say it was a hit in the office and within our circle of friends would be an understatement, as much of last week’s inter-office gchatting revolved around trying to figure them all out.

So if you have some time, take a run at it. To start you off, let’s just say that Nickleback, Buck 65, Blue Rodeo all make an appearance … and yes, contrary to my foolishness the two naked ladies are NOT folk/rock duo Tegan and Sarah.

3. 74 Beltway Insiders

New York Magazine recently asked 74 Belt-way political insiders on their take on the 2012 Presidential race. They were asked to answer a series of questions in an anonymous manner to provide insider insight into the election. And while this sort of information is fascinating to hardcore politicos, for us, the intriguing part was the editorial decision to reveal the answers within a series of jagged infographics.

By leveraging a series of sharp, yet at sometimes awkward infographics to reveal the answers, it changes the entire atmosphere of the piece – from a formal poll to a more whimsical and approachable set of answers.

4. The Shadow League Sirens

Our good friend Cam Hoff is an avid Baseball fan and in so got us hooked on New Era Baseball hat designers The Clink Room. These guys specialize in creating customized New Era Baseball hats and logos for Minor League Baseball Teams across North America. This past week they released the first in a series of fantasy team designs for The Sirens.

As an avid lover of sport design in general, the Sirens logo, although not a real team logo, is just a stunning design. To make it that much better the whole hat combo is just really well done.

On Saturday afternoon, members of Team Armadillo were able to participate in the third annual UX Camp Ottawa.

The UX (User Experience) Camp in Ottawa is the largest conference of it’s kind in Canada, drawing not only designers and developers from the Ottawa/Gatineau region, but also from Montreal and Toronto. This year’s conference was a two day event, comprising of a full day conference of speakers on Saturday and a design camp on Sunday. Members of Team Armadillo took in a full days worth of fascinating speakers on Saturday, which allowed our us to get a first-hand look at the active design and development community in Ottawa.

The Saturday conference was jam-packed with interesting sessions, including topics revolving around the role of design and the user experience in everyday product and business design to the various issues regarding accessibility within the user design experience. Of the talks that we took in, the most notable discussions for our team revolved around Philadeplhia-based Jessica Ivins’ discussion on designing for the female audience, Shai Idelson’s full blown debate on the design lessons from Evil Admen and most importantly Jess McMullin’s talk on user experience as a key factor of encouraging Citizen Engagement. As you can tell from our brief little run through the day was filled with wide-spectrum of topics and was a great window into the ever changing world of user experience.

We had a great time at UX Camp Ottawa and want to send a quick shout out to all of the volunteers and organizers of this great event. Because of which, we’re already looking forward to partaking in next year’s addition.

Over the past five years the team at Armadillo Studios have prided ourselves on having an eye out for the latest and greatest in the Web Design and Social Media industry. Unfortunately, due to our increasing work load and growing family of clients, we’ve found it pretty difficult for us to write about these trends. So in a way to keep our blog a bit more active and interesting, we’ve decided to launch the Nine Banded series of blog posts.

What is Nine-Banded?

Simple, every two weeks we’re going to put together a short blog post with links to three or four really interesting tid-bits of information. They can be anything related to links on design trends, the newest social media tools, records we’re listening to in the offices, stories or happenings with our corporate clients or industry friends, funny pictures or interesting events that we’ve stumbled across – pretty much anything that we think would be interesting to our followers. Basically, a way for us to share some of our knowledge and discoveries over the past few weeks, without having to be too serious.

So with that we’d kick off the first edition of Nine-Branded, with four fun links.

1. Hero Images

A new Calgary-based stock photography company is sprouting up in the city. It’s name is Hero Images and it looks amazing.

We can’t wait for a great new local company to come around and help breath some new life into the industry. Let’s just say we can’t wait for the launch of the full product line.

2. Draplin Design Co.

In July of this year our friends at the Calgary Inter-Agency Coalition brought Aaron Draplin of the Draplin Design Co. to speak to designers of Calgary. It was a great night and one of the best talks we’ve attended in a long while. And the best part about it we got a couple of sweet special edition Draplin posters to adorn The Armadillo Studio… studio.

If you want to know why this was a great little event, just watch the video below (It’s from a Draplin talk in New York, but you’ll get the gist of it).

3. “Design Is A Job” By Mike Monteiro

If you happen to be in the creative fields (designer, web design, development, freelance writer, etc.,) you need to read this book. It’s everything you need to know about running your own small business in a tiny 70 page book.

Trust us, after five years of hustling in the industry the tips in this book are invaluable.

4. Election 2012: Coffee Wars Edition

Fast Company Co., had an interest article on 7-Eleven’s latest campaign to turn the 2012 presidential election into coffee war. Essentially, during the duration of the campaign, customers can purchase either Obama or Romney coffee cups to show their “support”.

Neat idea and if there’s anything that Team Armadillo loves – it’s Coffee and Politics.

5. What Does Nine Banded Mean?

Oh yes, Nine-Banded is the most common type of Armadillo found in North America. Since ‘Armadillo Nuggets’ was a bit too offensive, Nine-Banded sounded far more interesting… even if we don’t have nine items to talk about.

Early last week, Team Armadillo was more than happy to launch the official campaign web site for our good friend Troy Wason.

Troy is seeking the Calgary Vice President position for the Progressive Conservative Association of Alberta. As a great friend of the company, we were more than willing to help his campaign team create a unique web site that would reflect Troy’s progressive and forward thinking philosophy. Using a combination of web fonts and the campaign’s minimalistic branding, we set about to create a site that would provide a clear and direct message to potential voters. As usual, this WordPress powered web site also showcases the campaign’s social media elements, while also allowing the campaign team to keep potential supports abreast of the latest events through the intuitive Content Management System.

We here at Armadillo Studios want to wish Troy all the best on the campaign trail and are excited to add TroyWason.ca to our growing portfolio of political campaign web sites.
